Clubs commemorate ANZAC Day the community way

By on April 20, 2016

Soldier On, Australian charity that supports our Defence Force personnel, reintegrate back into the community, is the ClubsACT charity partner for ANZAC Day. Clubs across the capital will aim to raise money for this essential work, last year amassing $25,000 for Soldier On’s activities in the ACT.

John Bale, Soldier On CEO said he was thrilled to have ClubsACT and a majority of Canberra’s clubs supporting Soldier On again this year.

“The clubs’ generous donation allowed us to undertake a number of programs. We focus on physical and mental health of returning servicemen and women, their family, their community, and their future,” Mr Bale explained.

The Canberra community enthusiastically embraces ANZAC Day every year. It’s not surprising that Canberra’s community clubs play a central role in the celebrations. This year the Canberra Southern Cross Club will offer its members the chance to win a free trip to Gallipoli in Turkey.

In fact 25 April is one of the biggest day of the year in our community clubs, which go to great lengths to help Canberrans commemorate the day.

Canberra clubs provide a range of activities to for Canberrans for ANZAC Day. Some venues provide free transport to the National Dawn Service at the Australian War Memorial, special ANZAC Day breakfast offers and of course traditional Two-Up events.

Canberra’s clubs donate over $11 million a year to the local community, and have contributed over $125 million over the last decade.

Gwyn Rees, ClubsACT Chief Executive, emphasised that Canberra clubs pride themselves as not-for-profit organisations, returning profits back into the community through charitable and in-kind donations.

“ANZAC Day is arguably one of the biggest days of the year for our clubs and this year we hope to raise even more for Soldier On. Clubs staff will be all hands on deck to ensure the day runs well for all patrons and guests,” said Mr Rees.

Ian Mackay, Canberra Southern Cross Club CEO, said members attending the Woden venue across the ANZAC Day long weekend will also have the chance to win a trip to Gallipoli.

“Simply by spending $4 or more across the long weekend from Friday to Monday, Members will receive an entry into the prize draw, which will take place on 26 April.”

“We are delighted to have Two Up back at Woden as well as showing all the major sporting action across the football codes and racing,” he said.
